T8's 5-1 Green Dragon

Two of the local hostelry teams met in this Notts Sunday League Premier Premier game,  and they thoroughly entertained the 15 or so that were in attendance!

T8's made hard work of beating Carlton Top Spot last week,  but ended up winning 5-1. This game was slightly easier on the home team nerves, as Dragon seemed a little overawed by some of the local "star" players they were to face, and gave them time and space all over the pitch.

Danny Gamble had the ball in the net on 11, but the linesman ruled out the effort after adjudging that Gamble was off side when he headed the ball home.  

Gamble did set up the first goal for T8's though on 23. After he was found by Greg Conn at the far post, the big striker had the relatively easy task of rolling the ball across the goal to where strike partner ANDY START was waiting to tap the ball into the goal.

START converted again with 27 played, again a simple chance from a couple of yards out.  GREG CONN headed powerfully home at the near post on 31, then the first half scoring was rounded off by a superb effort from JERMAINE WARD, the wing back running down the right before cutting inside and slotting the ball neatly across the Dragon keeper and into the far corner.  H-T 4-0

Within 30 seconds of the restart, DANNY GAMBLE added to T8's tally. After a surging run down the left, Conn played the ball into the 6 yard area where the big number 10 was on hand to divert the ball past the Dragon keeper into the net

Thoughts of a double figure score came into my head, but Dragon showed a little more resolve throughout the rest of the half, and had one or two decent chances of their own.  Jake Pearson in the home goal was called upon to keep out several efforts as Dragon took the game to their hosts, prompting the T8's bench to cry "where is the team that played in the  first  half?" 

With five minutes remaining, Dragon skipper MATT SISSON headed home from a right wing corner to spoil the clean sheet, but it was too little too late.  Referee Bill Turton ended the game a minute early, but on the whole had a relatively easy time of it. F-T 5-1

Blidworth Welfare 0-3 Hucknall Town

Venue: The Welfare Ground, Blidworth.

We sat in the Welfare car listening to commentary of the dying moments of the Spirites v Stags game - the 6 minutes of added time meant we arrived in pitchside just a couple of minutes before kick off time.

We were greeted by Dave Voller, who gave us the sad news that our good friend and Blidworth stalwart Scott Ward, had left the club in somewhat acrimonious circumstances. Dave was carrying four footballs and still managed to shake my hand!  Mind you, he did spend a fair portion of the game retrieving those balls from the thick brambles that are over the fence on the dugout side of the ground.

Blidworth had named Voller and Assistant Manager Kev Heathcote as subs. Voller has an elbow injury that meant he couldn't start the game, whilst Heathcote is nearer to 50 years old than he is to 40, so was hoping he wasn't needed! Former Hucknall keeper Jason Fisher lined up at right-back as the Welfare squad was down to the bare-bones.

The game began slowly with neither side creating a deal. The visitors took the lead on 24, another former yellow RYAN CHEETHAM stabbing the ball into his own net after he was put under pressure from Eugene Francis.

Tom Crisp saw his 20 yard volley well save by Blidworth keeper Tyler Merryweather on the stroke of half-time, but other than that the half was fairly stale. H-T 0-1

Hucknall looked a little more in charge as the second half began, with Francis leading the line looking more and more of a threat.

Jonathan Hamilton ran through the Welfare defence in the second minute of the half, and it took a terrific diving save from Merryweather to keep out the number 9's effort. Francis tried two shots from distance on 52, but both flew well over the bar. 

Soon after, Mark Smith fired in a free-kick that crashed off the underside of the Blidworth bar, and watched in disbelief, along with everyone in the ground, as John Whetton headed the rebound well over from just a couple of yards out. 

On 73, Welfare centre-forward Josh Bye won a race to the ball with Town defender Josh Henry, and hit a shot that flew agonisingly over James Beddingham's bar. Could have been 1-1, but JONATHAN HAMILTON increased Town's lead on two minutes later, firing across Merryweather from the corner of the 6 yard box.

Seconds later Town grabbed their third, JOHN WHETTON gifted the ball in front of the goal, and gleefully slotting home.

The game was now over for Blidworth, and they decided to rest Fisher and give Heathcote a game. F-T 0-3

Sixth game in six days - 29 goals! Oh, why can't I find a flipping 0-0 bore draw!! Spent the game in the company of good friend and Stags barmy Scotty Annable. One or two reminiscences  of times gone by when Scott and I followed the Stags everywhere! Some really good  memories!!!

Well done Tony Squires for producing a very presentable programme - only £0.50 and 22 pages. Good report in there from the Heanor v Lincoln game...

Heanor went a goal down in the 4th minute, ROSS LAMB presented with a simple tap in after the Lions' keeper had fumbled a free-kick fired into the 6 yard box.

Although the Stags dominated much of the first half, it took them until the final minute to add to Green's goal, ROSS LAMB lifting the ball over the Heanor keeper after his run in from the right was well spotted by the Billy Simpson. H-T 0-2

The lead was extended in the 50th minute, TROVARN DAMAR THOMPSON lashing the loose ball home from 10 yards after a bit of a mad scramble in the box.

DANNY FLETCHER added the fourth Stags goal on 54, rounding his marker to slot home from an acute angle. Centre-half CHARLIE BROWNLIE rammed home the fifth with five minutes to play - and the scoring was rounded off with seconds of the game left, a shot from BILLY SIMPSON too good for the Heanor keeper. F-T 0-6

Our first visit to the new look Town Ground - you have to be impressed with the work that has gone around the place. Derby County have agreed to take a team to play Heanor on Monday 14th October to celebrate the official re-opening.

There seemed to be a lot of Heanor Town jackets about the place - and everyone seemed to be enjoying their own specific roles within the club.

Spent the game in the company of Press Officer Tony Squires, and Bilborough Town Publicity Office Jevon Swinscoe. Pinxton midfield general Joe Riley had half an hour with us, but the major surprise was seeing such a large contingent of Eastwood Town faces in the ground.

The Eastwood faithful are understandably a little fed up with things at Coronation Park at the moment, but for entertainment and goals, the short trip to Heanor gives them plenty of both.

Great to see Dan "Welshy" Williams back in the Lions' colours - a class addition to the squad. Sad to see our friend Mark Frost benched - I'm sure "Frosty" will bounce back from this setback and if he doesn't decide to stay with Heanor, he won't be out of a "job" for long.

Lincoln had a few really good chances early on in the game, but their poor finishing must have had their gaffer apoplectic! 

Samir Boulghassol fired hopelessly wide from in front of goal on 10, then after Heanor keeper James Baker fumbled a cross in from the left, Francis Harkin blazed the loose ball wide after he looked odds-on to open the scoring. 

Tom Parker brought out a diving save from Baker on 24, but instead of being comfortably in the lead, the Railwaymen could have gone a goal down but for the linesman's flag. Williams headed Chris Shaw's cross at goal and Richard Chester fumbled the effort over the line, but Williams was adjudged to have been in an offside position when the cross went in. H-T 0-0

The second half was just 6 minutes old when Heanor took the lead - KIERAN DEBROUWER firing to Chester's left after latching onto a ball played into the box from midfield.

Five minutes later the Lions double their advantage, DAN WILLIAMS was picked out in the box and swept the ball past Chester.

DEBRUOWER was upended in the box on 68, and blasted home the spot kick to make it 3-0. Williams should have scored again seconds later, a belter of a ball from the left found him unmarked at the far stick, but "Welshy" somehow managed to skew the ball wide of the post with the empty net glaring!

COURY GRANTHAM added the fourth with four to play, firing home across Chester from the corner of the box. As we were discussing that goal, ALEX HAUGHTON flicked the ball up and volleyed it home from almost the same place.

DEBROUWER completed his second hat-trick in 5 days on 90, a simple tap in after he was again left unmarked in the box. F-T 6-0

There is little wonder Lincoln are second from bottom of the league. They can't finish and they can't defend - a recipe for relegation if ever there was one. I wish them all the best, but it looks like it's going to be another long, hard season for the team from Lincoln.

Heanor looked good once they got going, but this was poor opposition and the Lions still have room for improvement.

Eastwood Town 1-3 Loughborough Dynamo

Venue: Coronation Park, Eastwood.

After the Badgers were on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline on Saturday, Manager Nick Hawkins made four changes to the starting eleven for the visit of Dynamo. Out went Whitman, Robinson, Simmons and Raven - replaced by Burton, Slater, Garner and Kirk. Not that it helped any - the visitors were far too good in every department and were fully deserving of the three points.

Loughborough Manager Tommy Brookbanks watched the game from the stands - and he must have liked what he saw, as his charges took  the game to Eastwood and ran the home defence ragged.

Eastwood lined up in a 4-5-1 formation, with Keiran Wells ploughing a very lonely furrow up top. Playing this formation at home, against a team below you in the league makes no sense to me - but what do I know?

The home team were two goals down before they had their first serious effort on goal, but with 5 in midfield and the ball more often than not by-passing the lot of them, what else was to be expected? 

The goals were both scored by Dynamo striker BRUNO HOLDEN and both scored in the 28th minute! The first was a sweet volley from 12 yards after he controlled a superb ball in from the right from Rob Norris. The second was straight from the restart and saw the no.9 run through the Badgers' midfield without a single challenge and unleash a low drive from 25 yards out that beat Gary Hateley's despairing dive. 

Richard Whyman did manage to force a save from Kahil Mann-Kier on 39, but apart from that the home team never looked like scoring. H-T 0-2

Dynamo went further ahead with just 10 seconds of the second half gone. Referee Andy Park was unhappy with the first attempt to re-start the game, and Badgers keeper Hateley was totally unprepared when the Ref eventually blew his whistle after the 30 second delay - and NATHAN WATSON took full advantage, looping the ball, from just inside the centre circle, over his out-stretched arms and into the net. What a finish - fully 45 yards out! Take a bow, young man! 

Eastwood made changes as they tried to find a way back into the game, but the changes were in personnel only - the formation stayed the same. Changing one lone striker for another when you are 3-0 down was slightly bizarre, especially when Shannon Grant would have made a decent enough pairing along with with Wells. 

As it transpired the Badgers did make more of a fist of it during the second period, but Mann-Kier was not unduly troubled. He was  culpable for the Badgers goal in stoppage time though - racing from his area in an attempt to get to the ball before SHANNON GRANT, but failing miserably allowing the sub to fire into the goal from an acute angle. 

Great finish to the game, but Eastwood fans must be slightly worried at their teams current form - 5 games without a win, with 5 goals scored and 12 conceded. Must be some concern at the gate of 114 too. Steve Peat mentioned in his programme notes that attendances were on the increase, (a midweek game against Loughborough Dynamo is never going to be a crowd puller) but with the form that the Badgers are showing at the moment, I can't see that trend continuing.  F-T 1-3

Arnold Town U19 0-3 Ollerton Town U19

Venue: Eagle Valley, Arnold.

Monday night - Billy No-mates again! Still - the Arnold and Ollerton youngsters put on a good show, and although Arnold lost their third game on the spin, they are very young and are still learning. Arnold have the majority of their last seasons Under 16's playing at U19 level -  they will struggle against teams who have been together for a couple of seasons, but as a "work in progress" they should improve as the season goes on. 

The Eagles held out for 33 minutes, but then gave AARON NORMAN too much space to shoot on the edge of the box, and the no.7's effort took a slight deflection before flying past Joe Gretton in the Arnold goal.

Left-back KASEY DUNN scored the Ollerton second on 37, ramming the ball home from close range after the Arnold defence failed to deal with a corner in from the right. 

Right on half-time, Simba Ganyiwa was tripped in the box and Referee Wayne Gray had little option other than to award Ollerton a spot kick. Ganyiwa dusted himself off and fired the penalty to Gretton's right - but the keeper had guessed correctly and his superb diving save thwarted the no. 11. H-T 0-2

The second half saw Arnold try to get back in the game, but the Ollerton back four were having none of it! 16 year old Daniel Chadwick has just signed forms to play for the Arnold 1st team - and he looked dangerous when he came on - but there was no joy to be had from the solid Ollerton defence. 

It was another one of the visiting defenders who grabbed the third Ollerton goal on 78, JAMIE McALLISTER beating his man and hitting a low drive past Gretton from 15 yards out. F-T 0-3

Ollerton's MOM was, without doubt, James Hogg. The midfielder wanted the ball throughout the game and his distribution was superb. A little on the diminutive side, but one to watch, I reckon..

Sunday 22nd September - Notts Senior League Premier Premier Division

Out in the late September sunshine for this game - it's a pity the first half wasn't as bright! T8's showed very little of last seasons championship winning form, and Top Spot would have been streets ahead if they could have put their numerous chances to bed. H-T 0-0

It all changed in the second half though - the home team looking more and more dangerous going forward.  They took the lead on 51 through REECE JACKSON - a thumping header in front of goal from a Jermaine Ward right wing corner.

Damien Mann set up CHAY BETTERIDGE for T'8's second in the 68th minute, but Top Spot were back in it after 77, their no. 14 tapping home after a shot had cannoned of the foot of the post.

Straight from the restart, Danny Hayes received the ball and fired a great pass over the Carlton defence, giving  DAMIEN MANN the simple task of  lifting the ball over the keeper to restore the home teams two goal advantage. 

DANNY GAMBLE added the home teams fourth with 6 minutes to play, collecting a through ball before rounding the keeper and tapping home. DANNY HAYES has always been a terrific header of the ball, and for a centre-back, scores more than his fair share of goals - he netted  again in the final minute,  a neat header at the far post from Betteridge's well place free-kick. F-T 5-1

Carlton Town 4-0 Eastwood Town

Venue - Stoke Lane.

What a glorious September afternoon - unless you're a Badgers fan that is!  The sun blazed down on the Bill Stokeld Stadium - most people present (including me and Kev) had brought along big coats  - the usual attire required at the end of September!

Admission via a Complementary ticket provided by our good friend Mr. Brian Dennett, and we were treated to a cracker of a game.

Although the scoreline is slightly flattering for the Millers, they took their chances well, whereas Eastwood didn't. 

We had a word with Carlton's Julian Topliss prior to kick off - he is a week away from a return from a hamstring injury, but with Blair Anderson and Sam McVicar playing so well, he may have to fight for his place in the starting eleven!

Eastwood gave a debut to keeper Gary Hateley, signed in the week from Gresley FC - and he was called into action a couple of minutes in, first saving a McVicar effort then deflecting a shot from the loose ball out for a corner.

McVicar then tried his luck from the corner of the box on 9, but his well struck shot flew just over the bar. 

Eastwood almost took the lead seconds later, but  unfortunately  Tris Whitman's acrobatic overhead kick from a well worked corner routine flew just over the Carlton bar.

Anderson was causing a few problems down the left, firing into the side-netting in the 14th minute, then pinging a cross into the area that was met by McVicar, his flick header creeping just over the bar. 

McVicar headed just wide from another Anderson left wing cross on 35, then Josh Thornton's cross-shot force Hateley to tip over for a corner. Whitman had a decent effort well saved by Martin Kearney with 6 minutes of the half remaining. H-T 0-0

Things went belly-up for the Badgers early in the second half - and although the defending left a lot to be desired the finishes were superb.

Lee Torr cleared the Millers lines on 50, his ball out of defence picking out SAM McVICAR who ran across the pitch unchallenged before composing himself and unleashing a terrific low drive that was past Hateley  before the keeper could react.

Three minutes later, McVICAR was at it again, this time Gavin Hurren allowing the big no. 9 time to hit a perfectly placed curling effort that beat Hateley all hands up.

When the Millers won a corner in the 55th minute, there seemed to be enough cover, but former Badger ALEX TROKE found space at the back stick and headed the home team further ahead.

Eastwood made changes and began to apply pressure on the Carlton defence - but Martin Ball was looking imperious in the centre of the line, and in fellow centre-back Lee Torr, the Millers have a gem. 

The visitors were hit on the break with 5 minutes of the game left, JORDAN VILUNS dancing through the Badgers' defence before slotting the under the body of Hateley.

Eastwood still took the game to their hosts, and had one effort that hit the post, and one open goal miss that left everyone open-mouthed! F-T 4-0

This game was  officiated  by one of the best Referees we have seen so far this season. Take a bow Darren Russell - always in charge and commanded the proper respect. Mr. Russell did get an  earful from Martin Ball after the defender had made a particularly high challenge on Brad Munn that was quite correctly adjudged to be foul play. Ball was duly yellow carded - not for the foul, but for the verbal tirade.

Wednesday 18th September - venue: The Exchem Arena.

Out of the games I've seen this week, this was by far the one that will not remain in the memory for long.  Too many misplaced passes, too many poor decisions by Ref Jack Carter made this a stop-start game that was, at times, difficult to watch.

Not too much to write about, although it has to be said that for the first half-hour or so, Town were arguably the better team. It looked for a while that the Shiners Assistant Manager Brian Franks would be joining us "ontheroad" - he was certain he would be out of a job if his team lost this game!!

ANDY MOTTESHEAD was a centre-half for many years at Borrowash Victoria, but it seems Manager Mark Wilson has asked him to lead the Shiners' line, and it was the big man who opened the scoring on 36, volleying home Tom Leighton's superb right wing cross at the far post.  H-T 1-0

Athletics second goal came after a concerted spell of pressure, ROB FRETWELL drilling the ball past James Beddingham from 12 yards after the ball was rolled into his path by Lewis O'Grady.

Hucknall tried to get back into the game, but time and again wayward passes let them down - and with two strikers who played too far apart allowing the home defence time to clear, they  managed only to frustrate the loyal Yellow army. Jack Harvey was called into action on occasion, but those occasions were rare and the Shiners held on to claim the points. F-T 2-0

Basford Utd 5-1 Heanor Town

Tuesday 17th September - venue: Greenwich Avenue.

Our first visit of the season to Greenwich Avenue - have to say the place is looking good! The new changing room block is almost complete, and Chris Munroe reckons it will be open in a couple of weeks time. 

We didn't quite know what to expect tonight - both teams are "ontheroad" favourites, but while Basford have adapted quite well to life in the NCEL Premier Division, Heanor have had to rebuild after management and playing staff changes, and are still trying to find some consistent form.

Basford almost took the lead in the third minute, but Courtney Hastings' 18 yard effort crashed off the top of the crossbar with Heanor keeper Mark Frost well beaten.

Frost was not so lucky with the first Basford goal on 22 though - his call going unheeded by left back Corey Bowler who nodded the ball over Frost straight into the path of TJ NIGHTINGALE, who simply had to roll the ball into the empty net.

Bowler was guilty of making a poor challenge on the corner of the box in the 43rd minute, and from the resultant free-kick, JAMIE WALKER added his name to the scoresheet. His set piece curler into the box was missed by everyone and the ball flew into the net at the far stick.

A Walker corner in first half stoppage time was met by an unmarked COURTNEY HASTINGS at the far post to increase the home teams lead, a lead they were full value for. H-T 3-0

The second half was only 5 minutes old when United added to their tally - a superb Lee Morris cross tapped in from close range by an unmarked NIGHTINGALE.

HASTINGS added his second and Basford's fifth in the 58th minute, blasting home from a yard out after the Lions' defence failed to clear from a corner.

KIERAN BEBROUWER scored from the spot with 15 minutes left on the clock - this gave Town a second wind and they took the game to their hosts who, by this time, had dropped down a gear or two and entered into cruise mode. F-T 5-1

Arnold Town U19 1-3 Southwell City

North Mids U19 League Div 2 - venue Eagle Valley

What a belter of a game. Southwell have a great crop of youngsters who all seem comfortable on the ball, and aren't afraid to run at defences. Skipper Reece Self is already in Newark Town's first team - looks a real gem and I reckon Newark will find it hard to hold onto this talented young man!!

Arnold's team was mainly last years U16's - and although they defended  resolutely  at times, they allowed their opposition far too much time and space and were made to pay. The building blocks are there though, and I will be watching their development with interest.

Despite going a goal down in the 6th minute, failing to clear and allowing MO MOHAMMED to fire home from 6 yards, they went on to batter the Arnold defence throughout the rest of the first half - the only problem was they couldn't quite find that killer touch in front of goal.

On the hour mark, CAMERON BLACKBURN scored City's equaliser their excellent play deserved, then seven minutes later they went ahead through AARON BURNS as their unrelenting pressure finally paid off. They sealed the points with another well taken goal from OWEN ROBERTS in the 86th minute.

15th September k.o. 11am.  Notts F.A. Sunday Senior  Trophy  - venue:  The Summit Centre

Kirkby were champions of  NSL Senior One last term with a record of played 22 won 22. They were promoted two divisions to NSL Premier One. Southbank Athletic (The Wolds) won Premier Two and were also promoted  to Premier One.  

Town Manager Andy Cruddace was a little apprehensive prior to kick off, but his fears never  materialised  as the home team ripped into the Athletic defence and were leading four nil after just 17 minutes of play!

KIERAN WATSON hit the first in the 6th minute, firing across the keeper from the corner of the box. TOM CRESSWELL doubled the score on 11, firing in from close range after a melee in the 6 yard area. CRESSWELL headed home superbly from Watson's cross after 14 minutes had been played, then KRISTIAN WATSON fired across the keeper into the far corner to make it four. 

Southbank had their fair share of chances, and only some splendid goalkeeping from Steve Boot and some comical "finishing" saw the home team keep their sheet clean. KIERAN WATSON added the Town fifth on 23. H-T 5-0

CRESSWELL completed his personal treble within a few seconds of the restart, this time it was a screamer from 25 yards that the visiting keeper never saw until it was nestling in the back of the net. 

FRAZER CAMPBELL tapped home the 7th after the Southbank keeper failed to hold onto a fierce drive, then sub LIAM PARDOW bundled home the 8th at the far stick - the goal allowed to stand despite the Assistant Referee waving for an offside during the build up. Referee David Haigue over-ruled the Assistant and the goal was allowed to stand. 

Athletic then had a great chance to break their duck after Sean Lynk handled in the box and Mr. Haigue awarded the penalty. Unfortunately for Athletic, they found Boot unbeatable and the stopper dived well to keep out the no. 8's spot kick.  To rub salt in, Kirkby cleared the ball up field to Keiran Watson who picked out brother KRISTIAN at the far stick, and he made no mistake from close range. F-T 9-0.

The scoreline was a little flattering to Kirkby - Steve Boot made half-a-dozen great saves and there were a couple goal-line clearances as well as terrific 30 yarder that crashed off the bar.  Could have been 12-10 on another day!!!

Looking forward to 15th December when the two will go head to head in the league......

Wollaton FC 4-1 Nottingham United

Saturday 14th September - NSL Senior Division - venue Wollaton Road.

On the way to this game, we were both talking about Wollaton - and it transpired that neither of us had ever been to Wollaton Village! The ground was easy to find, but I had to take a quick glance at St. Leaonard's church - a lovely 13th century Grade II listed building. 

Took a picture of the board outside the ground, only to find out later that Kev had taken a pic of me taking the pic!

We didn't know much about either of the teams - the players were mostly unknown - only Wollaton keeper Paul Stanhope was a familiar face.

Quite a neat set up, with bowls, cricket and tennis also catered for.

The visitors were given the one dugout....

The first half was a bit frantic, but although there was a lot of  enthusiasm from both teams, the lack of ability let both teams down in front of goal. 

The only note I made during the first period was reference a Gary Ellis penalty miss on 21 after the Wollaton no.7 was tripped in the box. 

The visitng keeper did well to save, but it was a poor effort from the Wollaton skipper. The keeper did well to save again after the loose ball was hammered goalwards by Matt Eastwood. H-T 0-0

The second half was as different again from the first! What was in the half-time cuppa? I want some!

The home team took the lead with 3 minutes of the half played, MATT EASTWOOD looping a 12 yard header over the United keeper.

On 52, ADAM TAYLOR appeared to have lost control of the ball near the corner of the box, but somehow the no. 11 stretched out a leg to force the ball towards the goal - and watched with amazement as the ball flew over the keeper before nestling in the back of the net. 

United dragged themselves back into the game four minutes later when RYAN SILVERTON managed to get his head to a cross after the home defence had failed to clear their lines. United went on the hunt for the equaliser, but were sadly lacking up front, and hardly troubled the Wollaton back line. 

Wollaton added their third with six minutes to play. MATT EASTWOOD received the ball wide left and ran into the box, skilfully evading the United challenges before drilling a shot, low to the keepers right, that rolled just inside the post. 

Wolloaton were awarded an indirect free-kick on the edge of the box on 88, and when Matt Doyle rolled the ball to GARY ELLIS, he fired past the defensive wall and into the bottom corner. Not a very well positioned wall - it had the effect only of blocking the keepers view - and left him stranded when it was breached. F-T 4-1

Head count - very difficult to know who was with the teams, but at it's peak it reached 27. 

Referee was Tim Gregory apparently - very lenient with his punishments - booked a few on both sides, but could easily have sent three or four.....
