Carlton Town 2-0 Borrowash Victoria

F.A. Cup Preliminary Round – venue: Bill Stokeld Stadium

Our (great to have Kev back in the fold!) first visit to Carlton Town this season – lured by the £5 admission and a chance to see the new look Millers team that sits at the top of the Evo-Stik Div One South table, having played four and won four of their league fixtures. EMCL outfit Borrowash Victoria have started their league campaign well enough, winning three of their four games played so far

Didn't expect a big turnout even although Carlton reduced their admission charges. Thanks go to Brian Dennett for the team sheet, although he did manage to get a fiver out of us for sponsoring a horse in the upcoming Carlton Town race night!

Me and him

Lee Torr was playing for Clifton the last time we saw him - looks to have made the move from step 7 to step 4 without too much trouble. Solid in defence alongside old Carlton Town favourite Grant Brindley.

Shake

Kick off

Julian Topliss had the games first real chance in the 12th minute, firing just over from the corner of the box. Lee Potts also had a shot on target a few seconds later, his effort comfortably collected by Vics keeper Steve Smith.

Topliss should have done better on 17, but after a superb collect and turn on the edge of the area, the striker blazed his shot way over the bar.  Potts had another chance with a quarter of the game played - but his chip was a little too weak to clear Smith's big frame and the keeper saved with some ease.

I had just commented to Kev how well Referee Abbas Khan was doing - when he amazed us by continuing a dialogue with Potts over a decision he had just made and taking no notice of the game that was still going on!

Borrowash went close with 6 minutes of the first half remaining, when Jamie Pawley's free-kick was headed just wide of the post by Marc Finlay.

Carlton opened the scoring with their next attack.  Danny Elliott fired a superb cross field ball to Ben Flynn - he rolled it into the path of JULIAN TOPLISS who lashed the ball past Smith without having to break his stride. Flynn then saw his effort a minute later roll across the bar onto the roof of the net.  H-T 1-0

Topliss ( out of shot) fires past Smith

Carlton began the second half seemingly desperate to wrap the tie up, attacking from the off.  Left back Billy Bennett looks a good acquisition for the Millers, and it was his ball into the box that caused panic in the Vics defence - Topliss setting up McVicar in front of goal, but the big front man screwed his shot just wide of the post.

From a free-kick into the box, Tom Land's powerful header forced Martin Kearney into a save on 51, but when Carlton broke seconds later, Topliss and Flynn played a neat 1-2 and when Topliss' shot was blocked by Smith, Potts hammered the loose ball onto the crossbar.

A second goal for the Millers looked inevitable, as the Borrowash defence struggled to cope with McVicar and Topliss and were time and again tested by the front pairing. The goal came on 56 when Josh Thornton played a cracking ball into the path of SAM McVICAR who again didn't have to break stride before sending the ball flying past Smith.

McVicar slots home

Finlay again brought out a neat save from Kearney, after he raced to the by-line and hammered a shot across the Carlton goal.  On the hour mark, McVicar lashed a shot off the underside of the bar after Potts had seen his initial effort blocked.

McVicar so close!

Carlton replaced Potts and Flynn with Jordan Vilums and Blair Anderson, but Anderson's participation was to last only a matter of a few minutes as he dislocated a finger whilst going in for a challenge. The physio attempted to treat the injury by popping the digit back in - but to no avail and the sub was subbed by Luke Smithson. F-T 2-0

Borrowash played their part in a cracking cup tie, but the talent on show at Carlton was far too good for the Vics.  With Rueben Wiggins-Thomas and Alex Troke on the bench with Vilums, Anderson and Smithson, the Millers appear to have put together a decent set of players and hopefully they can continue their great start to the season.

Borrowash will always be there or thereabouts in the EMCL, and who knows, maybe this season could be the one where they get the promotion they so desperately crave.

Referee Mr. Khan has a lot to learn - mostly about his interaction with the players. Holding lengthy conversations with players whilst the game is ongoing is certainly not a good idea.  Mr. Khan, you do not have to explain every decision you make - just get on with the game. He only played 44 mins 56 seconds in the second half, despite the dislocated finger and 6 substitutions.

Hucknall Rolls Leisure 3-2 Selston FC

Tuesday 27th August - NSL Senior Division

Venue - Hucknall Rolls Sports Complex - kick off 6:30pm

It's a good job these teams were at the ground on time - if the game had kicked off any later than 6:30pm we would have been struggling to see the action. The nights are really  drawing  in now - soon be Christmas!

The teams lined up as follows:

Rolls: Walker, Harrison, Marshall, Matthews, Short, Duncan, Conn, James, Start, Allen, Matthews.Subs: Haskey, Soloman, Smith, Paterson.

Selston: Cook, Farnsworth, Davis, Breach, Howell, Gackett, Smith, Airey, Jefferies, Carraher, Haslam. Subs: Tomlinson, Short, Charlesworth, Marriott, Bastow.

Many thanks to the Selston twitter for the line ups and the live up dates. Excellent....

Rolls started off the brighter and were soon in the lead. Andy Start saw his effort blocked by Cook, but the loose ball fell to the feet of JACK ALLEN at the far post, and the striker calmly fired under the keeper as he tried in vain to recover and cover his near post.

Jack Allen

The lead was doubled on 21 when Jack Matthews picked out the run of ANDY START, and the  hitman  coolly lifted the ball over the  advancing keeper from the edge of the box.

Gary Breach and Andy Start

Good to see Gary Breach playing again - Breachy is getting on a bit now, but still showed a touch of class every now and again.

Kane Matthews was unlucky not to have added a third in the 29th minute, but his 25 yard free-kick cannoned off the bar and away to safety.

Selston clawed their way back into the game after 37 minutes had been played, Richard Jefferies slotting into the bottom corner after Rolls' defence had failed to effectively clear their lines.  H-T 2-1

The teams opted to stay on the pitch instead of making the long trek to the changing rooms - saved a good few minutes helping the game to finish whilst it was still possible to see the ball.

The scores were level with 12 minutes of the second half played when Rolls' keeper Jack Walker dropped a free-kick to the feet of  Grant Hackett. The Selston skipper calmly found CAMERON SHORT who fired home from just inside the six yard box.

Rolls were back in front on 67. GREG CONN was allowed to run in on goal after he collected an Allen header, and the no. 7 hit a powerful shot past Cook into the roof of the net from 10 yards. Great finish from Conn, but the time he was allowed to get in at the keepers near post was nothing short of criminal. F-T 3-2

The win was the home teams fourth on the trot - and they sit proudly at the top of the Division. Early doors yet, but they have a strong squad and ought to be at least in the running for the title.

About 50 in attendance - didn't see a programme. Spent the game in the company of Teversal's Sean Gregory and Pinxton's Ben Moore and Joe Riley. Joe - your farts stink !

Bank Holiday Double Header

....but to be brutally honest, not the best 180 minutes of football I've ever seen..

Blidworth Welfare 0-2 Bulwell FC - CML South
Kicked off at noon to give people a chance to go to other local games.Great idea, and attracted almost 60 into the Welfare ground. The winning margin should have been much greater than it was, Bulwell had at least a dozen great chances, but had only one in each half to show for their endeavours.

Blidworth: Fisher, Fottles, Lane, Rhodes, Ellis T, Dowdall, Bamford, Cheetham A, Voller, Barson, Stokes. Subs: Neal, Whitburn, Williams, Ellis D, Merryweather

Bulwell: Wheat, Murdock, Moore, McGaughey, Soar, Perkins, Hogg, Abdullah, Jeffries, Litchfield, Vipond. Subs: Saunders, England, Marley.

MAREK VIPOND scored the Bulls' first goal in the 11th minute, heading home a Scott Litchfield left wing cross at the far stick.

Blidworth were giving their all, but as Richard Lane's daughter said, Bulwell were the better team. H-T 0-1

The second half was much in the same mould as the first, Bulwell creating plenty of chances, but firing blanks. Until the third minute of stoppage time that is - ROB ENGLAND wrapping up the three points for the visitors by slotting the ball across keeper Jason Fisher and into the net. F-T 0-2

Admission £3
Programme: complimentary - and one of the better ones currently on offer! Cheers Scott.

Attendance - Rob Hornby 60 HC /Richard Lane HC 56 = average 58!

Good to see Lee Fottles back in action - not seen him play since he was with the Eastwood Academy a few years back.

Linby CW 0-2 Hucknall Town - CMLS
Magnificent attendance at Church Lane - 247 for a CML game! It was like a family day out, and the ground was bathed in sunshine throughout the game.

Linby had opened up the bottom part of the Church Lane ground for car parking - great idea and no doubt saved a lot of people from having a car parking headache.

It was a pity that the teams couldn't provide a thumping, pulsating local derby. This was low key, humdrum and looked as though it would be settled by a scrappy first half own goal.

Linby should have gone ahead in the 5th minute - but Martyn Burke could only steer his near post header wide of the post.

Burke fails from close range

Burke had to be replaced soon after, then Welfare lost influential defender Terry Henshaw a few minutes later. With Dave Marlow, Simon Marlow, Matt Murphy, Damian Mann, Aaron Ryan and Tom Coupe all missing, Linby were well below full strength, and losing Burke and Henshaw didn't help their cause.

Neither did the OG on 36 - two defenders tried to clear their post, but only succeeded between them in prodding the ball into their own net. F-T 0-1

247 in attendance

The second half was dire - and the only goal came in somewhat  controversial circumstances. Eugine Francis was injured in the first minute of stoppage time and was, as regulations state, taken to the sideline after treatment. Referee Martin Watts waved the player back on with Hucknall attacking. Leon Aikman picked out FRANCIS who duly hammered the ball past the despairing dive of Scott Miles in the Linby goal. In the spirit of the game, the player should not have been allowed back on the pitch until after the attack was over, but no doubt Mr. Watts knew what he was doing.

Saturday 24 August 2013

Clipstone FC 1-0 Appleby Frodingham

Saturday 24th August - venue; the Lido, Clipstone.

Decided it was time to pay our good friend Brett Marshall a visit, and have a look at the improvements he has instigated at the Lido.

The ground looks as good as it has ever done - the green carpet outside of the changing rooms has been dumped, and the whole area  laid with tarmac.

The new stand behind the goal is now complete, and a new corporate facility/office, "The Barry Clarke Suite", has been added next to the stand. The stand down the side of the pitch has been renovated and on the whole I have to say, very impressive!

A few pics of the ground - but as a cameraman I'm next to useless - but now that Kev's finished concreting his drive, hopefully he'll soon be joining me "on the road" again!

Clipstone had a few players missing for this game - holidays always take a toll in August so it can be difficult at times to field the same eleven two games on the spin.

Clipstone line-up: Jonny Parker, Gary Armstrong, Brandon Shaw, Rob Austin (c), Matthew Plant, Liam Pride, Rob Paling, Chris Baugh, Dave Bramwell, Pete Stubley, Nathan Millington. Subs: Keir Webster, Jamie Tryner, Michael Taylor.

I know absolutely nothing about the Appleby team, just that before today's game they had played 3 and lost three, scoring 8 and conceding 12. Should have been a breeze for the Cobras? Well after they opened their account in just the 4th minute of play, it looked like it.

Rob Paling made a solid run through the Frodingham midfield and played the ball out to Dave Bramwell, who in turn fired it into the area to where PETE STUBLEY was waiting to fire sweetly past the visiting keeper.

Unfortunately having to play defenders in midfield Clipstone never looked like taking the game by the scruff of it's neck, and were lucky that the Appleby front players were lacking a killer instinct. Having scored 3 and 5 respectively in their previous two league games, they were certainly not firing on all cylinders in this game.

Was with our buddy Mark Hales throughout the game - Mark is the Clippo goalkeeping coach. His charge today was Jonny Parker who is, it has to be said, rather on the diminutive side for a keeper. Having said that, Parker did well to rise and punch a header onto bar on 44 when it looked in all the way. H-T 1-0

Mark Hales

Invited into the hospitality suite for a cuppa and a sandwich at half-time, and very welcome too - thanks everyone!

The home team came out for the second half with a little more purpose, and more or less stopped the visitors forward momentum by moving Bramwell into the midfield, leaving Stubley up top on his own.

Appleby themselves changed things with 20 minutes to play - and began asking serious questions of the home defence. This was when being overloaded with defenders paid off for the Cobras - any danger snuffed out before it came to fruition. F-T 1-0

Great to see Brett Marshall in dugout action again - Chairman and Manager roles do not often combine too well - but Clippo are currently lying in third place in the NCEL Division One table! I think they will face a much sterner test on Monday when they entertain Shaw Lane Aquaforce.

Technical area, Brett!!
